improve file uploads, slideshows and galleries!

kssmitch
suggested this on March 27, 2011 04:28

just a suggestion:

whenever I upload images to either a slideshow or a gallery, I have to do them one by one, and its a bit time consuming, not to mention I have to sit and count to make sure I've not missed any if I'm uploading lots of images. I'd like to be able to select lots of files at the same time, and click upload, and for them all to go up together, at the same time. I can move them around afterwards.

slideshows would be good if I could hover the mouse over either the left or right of an image and an arrow comes up with an option to go onto the next image.

A slideshow in the style of the gallery would be nice too.

We need new image gallery options. We are being left behind. The most important developement would be so that people can click on "next/previous/close" on a pic in the pop up gallery. Most of the newer website systems these days have a pop up gallery where one can click on "next" without having to close the existing photo and then open the next one manually. Given the tools you have available with Flash I am actually a little surprised there are not more modern pop up gallery options available. The slideshow is OK- some good tricks- auto cropping, timing etc. I would have thought however that Moonfruit could even be leading the way with such gallery/ images tools given the Flash element of your system. As it stands we have had the same gallery  image tools for years with no new additions or major improvements- this has seen us get left a little behind. Can we chuck some serious image/gallery developements on the wish list (also would be good to have other transition effects on the 'slideshow', eg pixelate, wash over, fade in/out, in addition to the current 'slide/time' option). Cheers. Cohen

Hi James, yes we do have plans. But we have prioritised the Blog and Shop as the key features we must produce over the next few months. [Folks - Blog is literally round the corner].

Once we have the Blog and Shop out we'll be focussing on other areas and we do know that the image tools and features need some work.

So bear with us on this. Thanks.

i also have to pause the slideshow before I can either click on the thumbnails or press forward on the slideshow panel. If i dont pause it, it freezes ans i have to refresh the page. Doesnt look to great having to tell my viewers what to do if the page freezes.

Hi guys,

If you are interested there are some pretty amazing 3rd party tools you can use alongside (or within) our HTML snippet widget. These offer a variety of funky and professional styles and interesting tools to display your images in useful, creative and effective ways.

Once you decide which site offers you the best display tool, you simply:

  1. Register with the site
  2. Select your style
  3. Add your images
  4. Grab their code (HTML Snippet)
  5. Add our HTML snippet widget to a page on your site
  6. Paste in the Snippet of code from your 3rd party source

This should then give you more choice and control over how your images display on your site.

Thanks

agree with the suggested improvements in this thread, also think having the option to change where images pop up would be good (i.e. not in front of the thumbnails)

We do need more image manipulation tools, scrollable images with links (such as son www.tigerwoods.com) as an example - this is becoming very popular being able to 'scroll' through media and then link from it.

Roll-over images with links, better slideshows as othere have said.

Walt, although the tools you mention do work, for professional websites they just do not cut it especially when they all link to flickr.

I build sites for clients and although MF is damn good it just falls down on one or two things, I think images and media with scrollable fields would be great.

Hi Glugwine, Thanks for the feedback. We are well aware of the need to upgrade our image tools and it is on the roadmap for production this year. After the full release of Blog, and then the Shop.

With regards the tools above, only Cooliris (Flikr apar) requires Flikr. And they do work well for a lot of our customers, but your point is taken, and we're keen to roll out some much improved internal tools that make image publication much simpler, and much better looking.

Hi Walt,

I have found the links that you have sent do not fulfill my requirement for a simple 3rd party slideshow app that I can embed into an HTML snippet. They seem to be either focussed on other image effects or require flikr accounts etc. Do you have any other suggestions for where I could create a slideshow (with embedded links) for free?

Tks!

As my main use of moonfruits is to display a portfolio of work more gallery options would certainly be greatly appreciated.  eg more sleek gallery options like slimbox or lightbox 2 : http://www.lokeshdhakar.com/projects/lightbox2/

thanks.

Hi,

Yes I really think that having a Lightbox Slideshow option is so important for viewing portfolio work. The lightbox feature is great, but having to click on an image in your site to upsize, then having to click on the  'X' in the top right to close the image isn't the best facilty. I have had a moonfruit account for many months  but have been keenly waiting for the development of a Lightbox Slideshow. I am afraid I don't like the way the existing moonfruit slideshow functions or looks.

Galleries in MF are hideously way out of date...basic would be praise!  Come on guys...this is something lots of us are desparate to see...sleeker functionality and more choice on how we can present our images.  I've been waiting to see some improvement for so long now...I really am considering jumping ship some time soon if developments aren't forthcoming in this area.  Any update for us as to when this is likely to be addressed?

Hi,

Unfortunately, the gallery widgets are a little old now. It is possible to embed galleries from some other providers using the HTML Snippet, but we do have plans - after the ShopBuilder and Blog tools are finished, we will be looking to improve some of the older widgets, and I expect that the Galleries will be at the top (or at least very near the top) of the list.

Loving Moonfruit and the ease in which one can build a descent website with very little knowledge, But the galleries are doing my head in. Everything I can get out of them is simply a compromise and just want do.  I understand there are a lot of developments that need improving and introducing, but the basics surely should be given priority. It’s what we expect, gallery options galore or at the very least a convenient way of using third party widgets such as Adobe Lightroom web gallery templates. Pleas Gary start tell us all what we want to hear. “New galleries galore.” coming soon, real soon.

Finally I've tried several different website builders to find they have limitations, Moonfruit appears to be the cleverest in terms of decent formatting, however, it would appear if you are a big user of galleries, it fails in this area.  Back to the drawing board :(

I agree. MF is a great tool-set, but the image tools are old and aggravating.

I use my site as a portfolio for art and design, and i'm forced to "settle" with tools that might hinder my chances of dazzling a future employer.

I also may reconsider my next MF renewal.

Hi,

The 'Quota Exceeded' message means that you have filled up your allocation of storage space. Deleting unwanted files, and/or resizing images so that they aren't as large to begin with, will help.

Yes, please tell us HOW TO get our Adobe Lightroom capabilities on our sites. I'm really getting frustrated with Moonfruit due to the time it takes to hunt down answers to questions since there is no number to call. If it weren't for the time it takes to build another site, I'd be GONE. I'm a photographer, wanting to use my moonfruit site to allow access to photos for clients (using my lightroom gallery)... and I can't. It's really frusterating.

Hello!

I am referring to Adobe Lightroom 3. Yes, it is for editing and managing photos. How can I utilize the gallery and maybe even a login/client based portion of my site? I'd like to give my clients a way to view their photos online so I can eliminate an extra meeting just to go through images... or risk them being stolen online (by uploading them to a photo site like flickr. How can I make photos private per client on my site?

I also had the same issue and I do not think you can integrate Adobe Lightroom or its generated slideshows into MF sites. You can easily create a separate page (hidden of course) with  a logon required and password so only people with those details can view the contents. However you are tied to only using MF's limited (at the moment) graphic tools or use a flickr or another method such as cooliris. You can see an example here;

http://www.leicesterphoto.com/#/architecture/4556027958

I find flickr has been a benefit to my business not a hindrance, so I do not mind using it for certain work. Photography is a real difficult business these days and by using these social media sites you will attract business.

One other thing to bear in mind - you are already allowing people to copy your images from your own website anyway - why not advertise to a wider audience (flickr etc) what you can really accomplish.

Yes, where are we?  You've beentalking about it being top of the list since last June (ish), so what's happening guys?

I'm about to construct a professional design site and hadn't realised just how archaic the image display options are when I signed up and it's really making me think hard about whether I should go somewhere else...

Also,  some form of hover tool (so more information comes up automatically when you hover over an image or text box) shoudl be brought online as it would really help to help simplify sites and reduce teh information overload effect.

Cheers

How do I resize product images??  The template I am using displays all the products on the welcome page in what looks like a 4x3 white box.  There are 7 pictures displayed in a larger frame, and it looks like there is room for 2 more.   I uploaded a DVD cover which is obviously not a 4x3 perspective and the top and bottom is cut off, but I see no way to resize the picture or the white box in the product list section.   If anyone can help I would appreciate it.  garthurd@gmail.com

It would be nice to have this resolved

The question asked by garthurd has also been troubling also. I have uploaded several images to the shop, all 450X450. Most are fine but the occasional product image is undesireably cropped as described above. It seems to do this to images that are uploaded with a considerable amount of white space at either side of the object in the image. Perhaps there is a built in function that tries to 'auto crop' the picture in an attempt to avoid tiny product images. Maybe????

Hi Gary,

The mobile editing feature is great to have! But it doesn't solve my problem I'm having with my gallery on mobile. The square thumbnails that have distorted images of my work still look really bad. I sent you a message with a snap shot of what I mean and I haven't heard back. You mentioned that it might be a bug... Is this normal... This might be costing me some jobs as I'm using this as a portfolio and it looks horrible. Can I redirect my mobile site to an HTML5 version? Is HTML5 available yet? Or just a quick fix to my thumbnail issue would be great too... :)

Am giving my website a complete makeover, and like the new Gallery options. I found the "Shop" tool and thought it would be great for letting people order prints of my paintings. However, I can't control the size of the image (selected from the shop) popup --- it's really too large, can be easily printed so they won't have to BUY it! Would you please assist with this, so I can finish setup. Thank you.

What "new Gallery options" do you speak of ladyjane? Where are they?

April 30, 2012 19:12

r marble --- by new options, I'm referring to the "Pop-up Gallery" tool for laying out pages of images, which "pop" when you click on them, with a Comments window and social bookmarks row. This is working fine for me.

What I'm having trouble with is the "Shop" tool, which features a "Product Catalog," and when a product is selected, a "Product Detail" opens. The image on the Product Detail is FAR too large --- customers can easily print from the screen, rather than ordering my artwork. And there isn't any way to select the image and use the Editor to re-size it. It's bogged me down and I can't finish setting up my "Shop" until I can adjust this!

Nomisweb, I'm pretty sure, from what I remember, that you have control over where you insert new uploaded images into the gallery and if it put it by default last you can change the order... When you go to "organize" you can change the order and also add into specific places, someone corect me if I'm wrong :)

Hi victor

Its really not too hard. Doesn't require you to do any coding.

1) choose third party website to make your slideshow. eg flickr or photosnack

2) get html embed code

3) In moonfruit, insert 'html widget' then paste the code from the 3rd party website.

I created a quick example to show you. It shows a few images in slideshow using

a) flickr

b) photosnack, (has the most snazy features but costs to remove their little logo)

c) moonfruit

The thing about the moonfruit slideshow is that the controls, captions and borders can look a bit dated but it does give you the option to hide these

http://testingtest.moonfruit.com

Even though I have a paid account with the photosnack website, I still prefer the MF slide show in some situations. I'm in the middle of working on a website and use a moonfruit slide show as a non interactive banner at the top. Think its quite smart.

www.tropicalwholefoods.net/mountain-fruits

If you want a gallery with clickable thumbnails and dont like the moonfruit widget, I would say its worth trying a slide show instead with 60 second slide change time. Just explore all the options in the little edit window to hide any unwanted controls, captions & borders.

NB for interactive banners, slide shows etc, bannersnack is fab

User photo
andrewcraven2

Hey John

Athough using 3rd party providers like Photosnack is all well and good and not particularly difficult, it does not address Victor's basic point that MF should have more than the very crude gallery tools that are currently available, especially considering that they sell themselves on the ability to create highly professional sites easily.  Particularly for paying users of MF, why should we have to use a 3rd party and then have to pay (quite a steep premium) to have the watermarks removed just so we can design a professional looking site with slide shows/galleries etc... that you see all over the web?  MF have literally been saying they're going to do something about this for years and still nothing...what exactly are we paying for?  And if new gallery features are in the pipeline, it surely isn't asking too much to give us a ball park figure as to when they are going to come online is it??

Cheers

Hi Moonfruit,

I have just read this very long thread, I have been patiently waiting over 12 months now for a decent gallery but it is still to appear. I know there are options available (outside of MF to link galleries to) but they do not look professional in my opinion why re-route clients to  another website when MF should have the capabilities to provide a decent gallery.

My subscription renewal is not due until next Jan so I shall stick wth MF until then, but if there is no progress I shall be taking my website elsewhere.... shame really as I have been happy with MF in all other aspects....

Hi Moonfruit,

I agree with the first comment from jamescng, the gallery options are not very good. It has been over a year since your replied to it and not much improvement seem to have been made since. As a potential customer (for a photography website) the gallery options are a massive let down for a better looking website and to improve the browsing experience for site visitors and potential clients.

Anything coming up yet about it or a longer wait is required?

Thanks

Hi Guys,

We initially thought we wouldn't be able to start work on the promised image tool updates until after we delivered the HTML5 improvements later in the year. But as it turns out one of our developers has been busy building a new Pop-up Gallery. We still have a lot of work to do but we are confident that we should have it ready to ship to customers within a couple of months.

We certainly appreciate the patience shown by everyone but we do hope to have something out for you by mid to late September, if not sooner - given our Testers don't find any gremlins.

I would also like you to add more image gallery options.  In particular I would like an image gallery which does not have pop-ups, but discreet arrows underneath to move left/ right to the next image, and/or option to click on image displayed and it will move to the next image.

Hiya,

Can someone work out how this slideshow was achieved? as It's one of the moonfruit websites... I really want a slick gallery like the one in the link, where you click the image to go to the next one...

Hi Kate,

Maybe this?

http://www.photosnack.com/slideshow-examples/

I use some of their products. Quite nice but there is a small subscription to remove branding

Hi John, thanks for the link! Is it quite easy to place the slideshow from photosnack into my moonfruit website? how much is the subscription?

Thanks! Kate

Hi Kate

It's a bit more complicated than this but:

-$14/Month for unlimted slide shows, flickbooks, banners(also very nice) etc.

-For just one Slideshow you would pay $19 once.

It's fairly easy to embed it on moonfruit. Have you used the html snippet in MF before?

INSERT>Html Snippet > Then insert html provided by PhotoSnack.

Its free to try it out.

hi, can anyone help me out.

I'm in the process of creating a home page for my website and I really need an automatic scrolling slideshow, but it also gives the option for users to click back and forth at their leisure. Is something like this possible using MF as to be honest, I am really disappointed with the current image tools. It is something you expect from MS word 97!

Thanks in Advance

Please consider having a system for digital sales (something like payloadz) I can use widgets etc but I lose the Add to Cart features etc from not being able to use this in the shop. I can have the shop and place widgets but cannot delete the add to cart buttons so this looks too strange.. so have to build a page from scratch meaning no cart features.. :(

this is frustrating!!! i'm waiting this for so long, since 2009!!!!!! it's soooo sad that moonfruit continue to promises us a "very exciting new Image Tool in on course for release in the next few months." where is it?!?!?!  i'm coinsidering the idea to leave moonfruit just because  of  that! and for sure i'm not the only one!!! We need a new image tool, that let us make a REAL portfolio, we as designers, architects, photographers… need this tool!!! For us IMAGES and SLIDESHOWS are the most important part of our site!! Pleaseeeee think about us!!!!  I’m still here just because I already built my site and I don’t want to lose time building a new one!!!! moonfruit you  disappoint me!!! :( I’m desperate!!!!

I find it quite unbelievable that there is not a quality gallery built into MF, it's a basic necessity to "show your wares" ...please hurry up and let us have it :)

I have had a look at PhotoSnack and they have some really nice image galleries, I like 'Photoslide'.  It's not very different from the moonfruit slideshow but it is much more elegant (I like the arrows + no flashy transitions). Can we have something like that on Moonfruit?

Hi,

You can upload multiple files to the file manager, we have released a new gallery with more features, although there are no plans to upload multiple images into the gallery.
