When transferring from 123-reg to Moonfruit - what happens to 123-reg email?

Hi

I'm trying to transfer my website domain name from 123-reg to Moonfruit as I created the site with you.  I'm failing miserably at this at the moment, but that aside I was wondering whether I'd still be able to use the 123-reg email address that I purchased with the domain once it's hosted (if that's the right word) - or transferred - to Moonfruit?  My 123-reg domain is www.annainteriors.co.uk and the email address is @annainteriors.co.uk so I obviously would like to keep this...

Thank you.

123-reg

Hello,

I'm Nerys and I work here at 123-reg.

I can see from your post that you wish to keep your email address with 123-reg and host your website with Moonfruit, is that correct?

If so, to do this you will need to keep the domain name and the nameservers with  123-reg.  The MX records will be the default 123-reg MX records (which, unless you have changed since purchased, should be set by default on your domain name).  This will all keep your email working correctly.

To then have your domain name pointing to your website created with Moonfruit, you will need to point the A records for your domain name to the IP address of your hosting package, which Moonfruit will be able to supply you with.  Once you have the IP address, please use the guide below to set the A records for your domain name:

http://www.123-reg.co.uk/support/answers/Domains/Domain-Configuration/how-do-i-point-my-domain-name-to-an-ip-address-1200/

If I can be of any further assistance please do ask.

Regards,

Nerys

Hi Anna,

Thanks for posting. I see that you have already transferred your domain "annainteriors.co.uk" over to us. Thank you for that transfer.

Regarding your email address, while I am sure that 123-reg meant well in what they said, and would love to keep your domain with them, I have to correct Nerys' post stating that you need to keep your domain with 123-reg in order to use "@annainteriors.co.uk" for your emails.

In fact, you do not need to keep the domain with them, as you can re-create the email address with us after transfer. Your email content and records will not have been transferred to us, so you will need to check with 123-reg to see if you can backup your emails if you haven't already, but other than that you will see that you can carry on as normal.

Please do let us know if you have any further questions, we are always happy to help.

Thanks,

~ Mike

Hi both

Many thanks for your replies.  I'm still a little confused as to whether I can use the 123-reg email or not, despite I'm sure your spelling it out very simply!  In honesty, I'm not sure whether transferring my domain name from 123-reg to Moonfruit is the same thing as having the A records of the domain name point to the IP address of the Moonfruit page, as suggested in Nerys' post.  I've just tried logging into the 123-reg email and it seems to be working... does this mean it will stay as "mine" then?

Mike - as you noted I have now transferred my domain name to Moonfruit.  Does this mean that, in two years time if I wanted to renew the subscription and keep the domain name, it would be done through Moonfruit and not 123-reg?  And if I did set up an email address with Moonfruit, could it be @annainteriors.co.uk still, and would it be free?  It doesn't matter about any emails I loose with 123-reg as I haven't actually started up yet, still finishing the site.

Thank you,

Anna

Hi pixelsketch,

If you transfer the domain, your email  address will not work any more. You will need to create mailboxes with your new domain provider .  There is no option to transfer email addresses.

Hi Zoe,

Just to confirm, a domain cannot be transferred until it more than 60 days old. This means your domain will not be ready to transfer until around the end of March.

In the meantime, you can point the domain at your Moonfruit site. Just use these instructions (if you provide them to 123-reg they may make the changes for you):
