Why is my domain transfer taking so long?

Sometimes a domain name transfer can fail or stall during the process. The process is complicated and requires a number of technical and legal conditions to be met. The reasons that a transfer stalls, and you see 'Pending' in the Domains panel, could be down to one of the following reasons:

  • For .com, .net (and several others) domains, the Transfer Authorisation Code is incorrect (often characters and numbers are interchanged so it's always best to copy and paste the code)
  • For .uk domains you must supply our IPS Tag (GANDI) to your current domain name provider or registrar
  • And it goes without saying that the provider must change the tag at their end
  • You must ensure your full name and correct address (and post code for UK, US etc) are supplied - this information is legally required to be correct
  • Make sure your domain is not less than 60 days old (ICANN applies a 60 day no transfer rule following domain creation)
  • Make sure you contact your domain name provider and request they turn off domain 'Privacy'. This will ensure that confirmation emails (another legal requirement) will reach your email inbox so that you can reply and confirm your request to transfer
  • You will also need to double check that that your email address is current and that your inbox is accessible (if you do not reply to the transfer confirmation email then the transfer will fail)
  • You may also need to check Junk and Spam folders within your email account for the domain transfer email if it fails to arrive in time
  • And you may need to check that payment has been made through a card (via our WorldPay service), via PayPal in advance or by using a domain voucher

NB. If your transfer fails to complete within 24 hours please review these points above and all conditions have been met. If you think they have then please contact support so that we can check the process for you and advise.
