Blog Feedback and FAQ Thread

Gary
posted this on July 21, 2011 15:39

Hi,

As you may have noticed, the Blog was released to all today. We're still classing it as a beta release, as it is still being refined, but here is the place to give (constructive) feedback and ask blog-specific questions - if you want to ask about something that isn't the Blog, please start a new thread!

I will try to compile frequently asked questions into this post, and will probably work at converting some of them into FAQ articles.

Gary

How do I edit the font used on the blog?

The font settings for post titles and text are taken from the default Title and Body settings, which can be edited from the Design menu.

If you want to change the style for the blog only, you can do so by double-clicking on a post, to 'drill down' through the various blog elements, until you reach the underlying text boxes. Any changes you make to the font here will apply to the blog, but not the rest of your site.

The blog will be a great tool, however will it become possible to alter text font and colour? Also will it be possible to add a link to images and not just text?

Hi,

It is already possible to change the font style - it actually uses the default text styles that can be edited via the Design menu.

It isn't possible to link from images just yet, but this is being looked into.

Hi

The blog looks great, however I have just created a blog but then accidently deleted it. How to I get it back? I deleted the actual blog box on the web page and I can't where you can insert it again. I am still able to post new blog post but they are not appearing on the website anywhere do to the fact I deleted the blog box?

Thanks

Much prettier than the old one! I'm now in the process of drafting all my old blog posts into the new one so i can delete the old... tedious stuff...

I think you've probably answered this with the 'images' question - but is there a way of adding an embedded Youtube vid using the blog editor? As a workaround I left a space after the blog post using a load of line breaks, then added the vid as an HTML snippet to the page itself, but I'VE JUST REALISED this is going to move when I add another blog post! DOH! A pity, as youtube now offers 'embed' snippets for most clips, that we can't just copy & paste them into the blog/elsewhere.

Also, the tip about changing 'global' text styles is useful, but is it planned to add text formatting for individual blog posts, so (i.e.) you could use two colours, strikethrough, etc in a more casual way?

generally, though, a really big improvement and i've found no major (or minor, come to that!) glitches so far...

Hi Guys, really loving the new blog page and especially the twitter and facebook plug in....i'm not sure if it's just my site but i can't tweet certain blog posts and the twitter icon disapears when i click it, i am of course logged into my twitter account?

Also i'd like to share certain posts with my facebook pages which correspond with each of my websites, so far it looks like the facebook link will only post to my personal facebook page and not a business page....and my facebook avatar appears as a social plug-in on the link...any thoughts? Cx

Hi All,

Is it possible to give someone else permission to create Blogs without them having access to the whole Editor, ie a login or similar feature ? I have three sites and don't really wan to have to manage the blogs but also don't want any 'accidents ' happening too !

They are fixed, but can appear to move if the zoom level in the browser is changed, because they are rendered using HTML.

Hi.  Is it possible to have the most recent blog totally visible, whilst having the older posts part visible in a quick view archive list at the bottom (the remaining text within the "read more" function.)

I have been trying to move the boxes around and resize them which works when you do it, but then all snaps back to the top as soon as you click away, meaning that you have the most recent blog text on top of older posts.

It looks like it should be simple to do, but I might be hoping for too much?  Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

So for now, does each blog entry only have the same amount of space available before a 'read more' break is needed?  I can't resize one to show more text than the entries below it?

I can't see how to make my blog page look like my other pages.  I would like a white background and darker text for a start.... and I seem to have some junky stuff at the top.

Hi crystaloak,

You should be able to solve the jumbled text by removing and re-adding the Blog page itself. You will need to re-add any page content that you added, but all of your posts and comments will be saved.

Hi Heather,

By default, the Blog uses the site's global title and body fonts, which you can set via the Design menu. Any changes made to these will be reflected in the blog when you next load it.

Is it possible to add links to your blog text? For example, e-mail addresses which open into an e-mail, or a link to another page in my website?

I can add these things as usual after posting, but they disappear when I log out.

Hi again - I sort of asked the same question a while ago, but not sure if the answer above (Gary, July 28) applied to my question or the one underneath it...

I've constructed my site using 'Arial' as the main / global body font, but because text is generally added via textboxes have varied the point size for different pages etc. The 'default' arial font size is too small in the blog, but can't be changed. If I change the global body font for one where the default size is more readable (as has been suggested elsewhere) it messes up formatting on other pages where I have positioned html links over the top of underlined text to open youtube vids etc in pop-ups.  Sorry if it sounds a bit whinging, but while the new blog is a huge improvement over the old one the feature I'm really missing is the ability to use text visually - different colours, sizes, strike-throughs etc etc , so is the text entry box going to be expanded to include these kinds of features?

------------------

I've just spotted the question above regarding disappearing links. When available, will this allow me to link pictures hosted on (i.e.) photobucket so they are 'embedded' on my page, as i've tried every which way I can think of to embed images hosted elsewhere without success (all the photos currently in my blog have needed to be hosted in the site's file manager).  If not, will the blog at some point allow for 'html snippets' to be added, which is the way I solved the youtube/text link problem mentioned above?

----------------------------

Finally: The 'tweet' button in each new blog works fine as a way of instantly advising followers on tweet that I've posted a new blog, but I haven't found a way of doing this on facebook (unless i've misunderstood what the 'like' button does?) I've added a facebook 'share' button to the pagemaster, which I thought would work, but when I hit that it just adds another 'share' comment to the original thread I started on facebook rather than a separate post in the 'current' timeline iyswim(?)

Sorry if i'm asking really dim questions, but the whole 'social networking' / blogs / facebook stuff is all pretty new to me and i'm trying to get up to speed with no one to ask, few basic skills and only guesswork, trial and error and a very small portion of common sense to guide me...

Oh, may be easier to comment on the fonts and stuff if you can see what i mean:

http://www.lovely2cu.moonfruit.com

Thanks

Hi,

My post was aimed at your reply as well as the one below, but I can answer new questions too :)

- It is possible to change the default text for the blog, by double-clicking on a post until you reach the actual text box, which is buried under numerous layers of other objects. Any changes you make here will be applied to all other posts in the blog, but not the rest of the site. We are planning on making it a little easier to edit text in posts.

- HTML Snippets in posts are coming. This feature is actually being worked on as I type, and should be added soon.

- The Like button simply places an entry on your wall to show that you've Liked a post. The Share button probably would work better for what you want, but you will need to put it on the Blog page itself, rather than the page master.

HTH,

Gary

Thanks Gary - worked perfectly for increasing font size! Easy when you know how :D

I'm guessing if i use the same tip to browse to whatever layer the twitter 'like' button is on I could add the 'share' button too, so it shows up in every post? Not got time to try that at the mo, but will later and post back what it does on facebook page.

Ta very Muchly!

I made a new thread before finding this thread, so i reposted it here.

Hello

Im trying to make a blog page but the hole process dosent make sense to me :/

I select blog as a new page, I then add a post but it appaers right at the bottem of the page in a mess and from what i can see I have no ability to change or controll the post appearance apart from been able to change how many posts appaer on one page

All i want is a page that allows me to have a nice presentable list of posts, like Tumble, like Blogger etc. Something i can easily update with out having to set alignments every time a make a post.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks,

Guy

Also, I cant delete posts!? every time i choose to delete a post the secret moonfruit police overrule me saying "this item cant be deleted" or something. Why??

Guy, I've checked your news page (http://guywilkinson.co.uk/#/news/) and I can't actually see that you've added a blog at all to your site. Normally you go to Pages > Add a page > select Blog. I've added (and hidden one at back of site) called Blog2. If you login, go that page it should make more sense with the entries now at the top of that page allowing you to insert comments and articles. Let me know if I've completely mis-understood.

Suzette, can you explain in more detail what you did to load the blog -  as I can't see a blog on your site either on the Update page (http://once-upon-a-time.moonfruit.com/#/updatesfuture-updates/).. Like Guy above I've added the blog page and hidden it at back of your site. You simply need to start adding posts and depending on the length of your site you will either have too much white space or the blog will force the page lower. With your site you have a very long page. You can shorten up that page until you get some more content. Go to Pages > Page Management (sidebar) and change the length of the page. Once you get more traction on your blog and it grows in length you can adjust the length back to suit.

HTH.

PS. Not sure if you guys saw our FAQ on the Blog. They're not extensive but we are adding to them: http://support.moonfruit.com/forums/20180838-blog-feature

Sorry i forgot to mention that i had'nt replaced the news page with a blog yet but only tested the blog page out by adding it at the back of the website, Just like what you've done. I have posted on the blog 2 page and the same problem has occurred.

Please find attached a screen capture of the problem.

The problem been that the post appears right at the bottom of the page, and as far as i can see there is no way of changing that.

Thanks

Thanks Guy,

I'm not quite sure what happened but you've changed your screen offset quite dramatically. This affects the insertion point for your new pages.

I'm not sure if you've gone in and tidied up or the settings were changed recently but basically your settings have forced the blog down the page. The insertion point for pages has been changed.

If you go to Design > Page Start Point (sidebar) you will see your Page Offset has been set to X = -10 and Y = 1886.

If you change this now to X=0 and Y=0 then all the new pages you add will allow insertion of objects at the correct point on the page. For the Blog, I simply used Select All and dragged it (and all elements) back up the page to pretty much 0,0. But you are now free to move it as you see fit.

Hope that makes sense. If you need more of an explanation let me know. But your Blog page should now be OK.

No I haven't  changed the name of my site or added the new version of the blog page because I could not resize it to my page, then I could not see the comments, or approve comments to from other people to my blog, perhaps this is not a function? I am still using the old blog/news and whilst I can shrink it to a nice size, I cant enlarge the fonts, and I people cannot add.

Hi Carole,

Apologies for the confusion. I'd advise against using the Blog/News widget now that the new Blog is out, as it is sorely lacking in features.

The new blog, by default, will use the Body and Title font styles that are configured on the Design menu. Because the body text is currently configured to appear in white, you won't see post content against the white background of your site. You can work around this by placing a shape underneath the blog object that is in a contrasting colour, using the Arrange controls on the Edit menu.

Unapproved comments aren't shown on the blog itself - you can view and approve them by clicking on the Blog menu, then Comment List.

Gary

Hello,

At the moment, the easiest way to get from single-post to all posts view is to click away from your blog page, and then go back to it - this is something that we are looking at eliminating, as it is obviously not the best solution.

The meta tags for any post should show when you view a single post, but you will need to check this in HTML mode, as opposed to Flash. Search engines only ever see the HTML view, so this shouldn't be a problem for them.

HTH,

Gary

Re viewing all posts - thanks for that suggestion and it's a lot easier.  All I've got to do is click the Blog button and I see the full page, no problem now thanks.

Re the post metadata - I haven't put metadata in the single posts for the last few entries but I looked on some of my earlier posts, but when I click Edit and go to HTML view, I get the full page of the Blog and I only see the metadata for the page.  I might be doing something wrong though.

On my blog page, I've set the menu and the title to say News instead of Blog.  But on the RSS feed I get sent, it says Blog.  Also it could be anybody's blog because it doesn't say where the blog is from.  Is there a way of changing what it says in the header of the RSS feed, eg "News from My Company"?

Not necessarily just a 'blog' problem, but useful to know if using blog 'tweet' facility to share on twitter -

DON'T USE BRACKETS IN BLOG TITLES!

I had written a series of blogs titled (pt.1), (pt.2) etc, which i'd used the tweet button to link on twitter over the past week. I never bothered checking, but after posting todays did and it came up with 'error 404 site not found' message. By a process of elimination, it appears that the tweet button (or the shortener) doesn't like brackets. You can manually delete the brackets before hitting 'tweet' in the dialogue box that opens -

[i.e. change]:   Me Hollerdays (pt.4) -  http://www.lovely2cu.moonfruit.com/blog-news/4553672057/Me-Hollerdays-(pt.4)/177553

[to] : Me Hollerdays (pt.4) -  http://www.lovely2cu.moonfruit.com/blog-news/4553672057/Me-Hollerdays/177553

to preserve the 'intro', but probably easier to avoid brackets all together once you know.

I think this unlikely to just be a blog/moonfruit problem, but it could be something in the blog's tweet button code /shortener that can be fixed(?) either way, the workaround above solves the issue, as does not using brackets at all!

Hope that's helpful, and looking forward to seeing some of the proposed new features like HTML snippets, embedded (i.e.) photobucket hosted pics and improved text editing going in. :D

Hi all,

rwdpro: If you use the 'Article' option when you create your post, you will be able to post multiple images and text blocks.

lotus leaf: I'm afraid this can't be changed at the moment, but it is on 'the list'.

oddlyactive: Thanks for the tip - I think this might be a problem with the way Twitter interprets the brackets, but I will raise this with the Development team.

tvcf: This thread is for feedback on the Blog tool - could you send a query to Support, please?

HTH,

Gary

Why can't I delete the automatically-generated 'published by xxxx', which is my admin user's name that I don't want people seeing!!! In the old one you could delete it (after some effort), but I've painfully highlighted this box and tried to and it STILL shows (on a blog test page I've hidden, luckily). I could change the login to my name, but why remove one layer of security??
PS have emailed you well over a week ago and despite chasing still haven't dad a reply

I'm surprised this is a recent addition as it actually works better (in some areas) than some more established blogs. Anyway to the point:

1) Is there anyway of distinguishing individual posts? Usually you can "click" on a blog post which would take you to that specific page/post, with a unique url. Am I missing something here? It seems to just act like one big page, rather than individual blog posts.

2) No headings, again, difficult to distinguish individual posts. Of course you can type this in with text, but I think we really need individual urls.

3) Photo resizing works really well.

Hi,

chrismr368: I'm afraid it isn't currently possible to stop the 'posted by' line from showing. However, you can change the name shown via Blog -> Settings. Can you let me know the number of the ticket that you put through?

rharrisphotography: It is possible to view a post on its own page by clicking on the Comments link - this takes you to that post's URL, which you can then link back to.

Gary

Gary, thanks. Ticket is below (not sure why pastes in mad big letters!!). No, sorry, tried that already - you cannot delete or type over the name shown (I assume it's the 'author' field); whatever you do, it overtypes back to my user ID. I reported this under the ticket. Really annoyed at this as want to get the RSS feed working. Why remove the function that allowed us to delete it? Are others happy having their private ID visible?

Hi,

I've just updated the name successfully on my own Blog - all you should need to do is delete the old one, enter the new one, and click Update. Can you let me know at which point it reverts back to the original?

We haven't had any other complaints about having a posted by name visible, but this is why we introduced the ability to change it.

Hi Gary,

nothing happens. Also i was wondering my blog posts have a transparent bckgrd, can I alter this?

Cheers

Hi Jules,

Can you let me know what type of post you are adding, and what Add/Remove link tool you use? The background is always transparent, but you can place a shape widget underneath it if you want a background to your blog.

Gary

Gary, have just tried it again - highlight and delete the user ID in 'author', replace it with (in my case/choice) a row of blanks, click on Update, go to Post List view, select add a post, add one, click preview, and there it is again, my user ID shown. Also shown under View my site. Why is this affecting me only, it seems?

Gary, the link is a news story from a newspaper website and I'm pasting it into the space that comes up when I click the safety pin type icon ... in Add Article post. I click 'Apply' and it just disappears ... and thanks for the bckgrd tip.

As each new blog feature becomes available do we need to remove the blog page we have and create a new one?  How will we know when new features are available? Thank you.

Hi,

bandwagonmusic: You're doing the right thing, so that is a little odd. Can you let me know what browser and Flash version you are using?

markboardman: The version of IE might be important here, I'm afraid - we've just tested it in IE9 and the page length is as it should be.

mhorozewski: This was the case with previous updates to the Blog, but we are hoping that the most recent update was the last one that will require this. When the next update is due, I'll clarify this beforehand.

So grateful Ian.

Hi, I am a new reseller and have set up a couple of sites so far but haven't yet used the blog feature but plan to do so in the the future.  My query is that when I view the page source the blog refers to moonfruit eg. href="//yoursite.moonfruit.com/feeds etc, I really don't want my customers to see this.  Is there any way for me to remove this when not using blog and also when i do use the blog will it appear then also?

Many thanks

Hi,

@chrismr368: I've checked your account but can't find any ticket, could you please confirm the reference number? Also, this isn't the right topic for this sort of problem, in the future please open a new topic - this is one is meant to be about the Blog.

@mand218: This is a known issue, it's been raised to the attention of our developers and is currently under investigation. It will hopefully get fixed soon - apologies for the inconvenience.

@chrismr368: I just found your ticket, it was sent through the general contact form, which forwards email to a different support system. However I have no idea why it didn't get answered, it looks like it has slipped through the cracks somehow. Please accept our most sincere apologies for the inconvenience, I will get back to you via email in a few minutes.

ewww... Just read a post above  [mhorozewski sept 16 13:50] and gary's reply...

Does this mean I've got to 'update' my blog - i.e. start a new one and transfer all the old posts over?  If it does mean this I'll probably carry on using the 'old' new blog until such time as it's confirmed that all future updates will auto update without starting from scratch again (*boggle* ?)... gary, you said this will 'probably' be the case from the next update and you'll clarify then, but do you know yet when that's likely to be? Also, is there an easy way to transfer all the existing blog posts 'en masse' over to the new blog when I get round to doing it, or is the only option copy and pasting each individual one?

ok my old problems are now sorted but another one has arisen.... The Article and Test post types allow insertion of a link, but when the post is published, they are not visible. Why? Appreciate this was asked above, sort of, but I'm not clear why it allows you to add a link for no purpose. And since the old tool allowed links with no problem, how is this better, or am I missing something? I suppose I could insert a link in a separate box, but it wouldn't stay with the post. Must say am finding this whole process frustrating - no user guide??

Hi again...

as well as the question above about blog updates i was wondering why I can now only have one 'blog' ... with the old style blog i had two, because the layout was well suited for another purpose. Looking to 'back up' my blog ready for the next update I found you can only have one now, so the 'other purpose' (see the lies lies lies page on my website: http://www.lovely2cu.moonfruit.com (comes up when you hover on "blog/news" in the menu) will have to stay old skool as it were...

I'm also really nervous about 'deleting/replacing' the new blog to update even though it says my posts wont be deleted . Has anyone done this, and did it work/any horror stories? Just a bit nervous really as my site is personal rather than business, and the blog is the biggest part of it... Any other way I can 'back up' the whole blog to date without having to do it post by post?

Thanks

OA
